Liberty Midlands Mall Expansion
Liberty Midlands Mall, Pietermaritzburg’s leading shopping centre is growing. Construction is currently underway as the Mall expands to accommodate an all new Dischem Store, the first in Pietermaritzburg, adjacent to the existing basement parking. The Dischem Pharmacy, which will cover a space of 1 582 metres2, forms part of a R50 million revamp of the Mall and investment into the city by Liberty Properties. The ground beams, piles caps and lift pit construction to the Dischem store are well underway and the columns will be cast within the next two weeks. In order to ensure limited disruption to shoppers a temporary access to the undercover parking was created in April 2011 and will remain in place until the completion of the Dischem project in November this year.
In addition to the Dischem expansion, the Mall has also embarked on a conversion project in the garden food court. The conversion will see a new enclosed area created to house the Mr Funtubbles Fabulous Family Funfair. The Mr Funtubbles Family Fun Fair will provide all weather indoor family entertainment, rides and activities including an XD Theatre which will provide a 4D cinema experience giving cinema goers five minutes of total immersion in the imaginary. The experience is created through the co-ordination of motion equipped seats, light and wind effects as well as a powerful sound system. Manufacture of the steel roof structure for the Funtubbles zone has already commenced and is on target for its completion in November.
he Mr Funtubbles experience is not just about children – the experience also offers corporate team building opportunities and brings a much needed family entertainment facility to the city. Demolitions are already underway in the Garden Court and all of the restaurants in the Garden Court will continue to trade during the construction process. Extensive planning has been under taken in order to ensure all measures are in place in order to minimise the disruption to shoppers and restaurant goers.

The addition of a Mr Funtubbles Family Fun Fair is something which we are really excited about, it brings a new dimension of entertainement to the city. The experience includes games such as Tombola and makes for an all inclusive experience to the outdoor court .”
Liberty Midlands Mall is also extending the centre court office management offices and installing new public toilets which will serve the new Funtubbles Funfair and restaurant zone. A new security block and the rehabilitation of the existing three pedestrian entrances form part of the construction project.
Liberty Midlands Mall remains one of the top performers in the Liberty portfolio, attracting shoppers from throughout the region.
